Arie Whaton
For the 143rd week of "7 QUESTION SUNDAY" we shine the spotlight on another influential individual from the PNW. Arielle Wheaton is a permanent makeup artist located in Tacoma, WA.
4EVRGRN: Hey, AW! Tell us a little about yourselves.
AW: Hello~ My name is Arielle Wheaton, I usually go by Arie. I live in Tacoma with my beautiful wife and two spoiled ragdoll kitties. I’m originally from Maine, but I’ve been in the Tacoma area for about a decade now and I LOVE this city! Since early high school I’ve struggled with trichotillomania, a disorder that can result in a lack of eyebrows, eyelashes, or other hair patchiness or bald spots. Several years ago, I had my eyeliner tattooed and it was SUCH a confidence booster, and such an amazing experience that I decided I wanted to learn how to do this for other folks as well. It is my goal to provide a safe, comfortable, and judgement-free space for anyone with an interest in enhancing their features through permanent cosmetics.
What is the benefit to permanent cosmetics?
AW: My favorite benefit of permanent cosmetics (sometimes referred to as permanent makeup or “PMU”) is the convenience & time saved in your morning routine. You may still choose to apply makeup overtop of permanent cosmetics if you want to dress it up or have a more dramatic look for special occasions but waking up with your basic full face ready to go is fantastic! It doesn’t run, melt, or wipe off in the rain, the pool, under waterfalls...You can cry at the movies and still have pristine eyeliner afterwards! And if you have sensitive skin, you don’t have to worry about the irritation that some makeup products may cause.
What is your most popular service?
AW: I’d say it’s a 50/50 split between Classic Winged Eyeliner and Ombré Powder Brows.
How can clients prepare for their appointment?
AW: For brows - do not have any Botox treatments in your forehead area for 4 weeks prior to your appointment.
For eyeliner - do not wear contacts to the appointment, and do not wear false lashes or lash extensions for at least 2 weeks prior.
For all services -
Do not use any hair growth serums on the tattoo area for 4 weeks prior to your appointment.
Avoid alcohol and pain killers for 48 hours prior to your appointment.
Do not consume caffeine on the morning of your appointment.
If you have a specific idea of a shape/size/color/style you’d like, you can send me inspiration or reference pictures (or bring reference pics to your appointment).
If you have any questions or concerns, or if you have prior PMU from another artist, please feel free to message me or book a free consultation!
What should people know before considering permanent cosmetics?
AW: When people hear “permanent”, that can set the expectation that it’s a one-and-done sort of situation, when it’s more accurate to refer to these services as “semi-permanent “, as most will require touchup appointments periodically to keep them looking their best.
Longevity of permanent cosmetics varies greatly between clients, because every body processes the pigments at different speeds and each person’s lifestyle can affect rates of fading. There are quite a few factors that can contribute to fading, so you should be prepared for a little bit of touchup maintenance to happen once every 1-3 years, depending on how your body and lifestyle affect the pigment. For example, those with faster metabolisms may find they need to get touchups more frequently (perhaps once a year) than those with slower metabolisms. Tanning (either by the sun or in tanning beds) can contribute to faster fading of permanent cosmetics (and sometimes discoloration, if you are not using your SPF sunscreens!). If you use any products on your face that promote high cell turnover (like many anti-aging products), that can also cause your PMU to fade faster.
As far as pain goes - it’s impossible to promise that you 100% won’t feel anything, but topical numbing agents are used prior to and throughout each service to keep clients as comfortable as possible (I’ve even had a client fall asleep during a brow appointment!).
Where do you like to travel to in the PNW on your time off?
AW: There are some pretty amazing views at Hurricane Ridge (even for non-hikers, you can reach some of the viewpoints just by driving), and I like to stop by The Coffee Box in Port Angeles on the way there or on the way back.
Favorite local product?
AW: I loooove getting houseplants and soil from Jade & Co! And music from The Classic Crime.
Favorite way to unwind after a long workday?
AW: Trying new foods with my wife, and consuming stories in all forms - books, audiobooks, TV shows, video games, movies (can’t go wrong with the extended edition Lord of the Rings ). If I’m listening to an audiobook, I like to garden, clean or aquascape my aquarium, or create art while I’m listening.
