Byrt & Gertys Kids Redeux

For the 113th week of "7 QUESTION SUNDAY" we shine the spotlight on another influential individual from the PNW. Byrt & Gertys Kids Redeux is a consignment shop for children that features local handmade items.

4EVRGRN: Hey, B&G! Tell us a little about yourselves.

Byrt & Gertys Kids Redeux is a small scale children's resale shop in the Lincoln International Business District. We opened up in April of 2020, right at the beginning of the pandemic. Inside of our adorable boutique-like store you’ll find quality second hand children's clothing, accessories, books and toys that are affordable, some fun new products and handmade items from local makers. We take great care to ensure the secondhand items we present are in excellent condition. This is because we want to normalize thrift shopping to not only help families save money, but support the circular economy of fashion. Also not everyone wants to dig for a deal, so we do the work for you.

Byrt & Gerty are our nicknames for each other, we're really Silky and Nancy (respectively), a couple of best friends always looking for an adventure. Nancy runs the day to day operations, and Silky is a silent partner, but always there to support Nancy when she needs it.

What’s the biggest benefit of being consignment items for children?

B&G: Kids are expensive. On clothing alone, families can spend an average of $800 per year, per child. Also, with them growing so fast, you don’t get the full value of what you spend on those clothes! When you shop second hand, you can recoup some of that lost value when you trade in clothes, and also save money when you’re upsizing your kiddos wardrobe!

What type of product is your most popular?

B&G: Toddler clothing is the most popular item, followed by the Indestructible books. (That’s one of the new products we carry! Those are a must have for any new reader!)

Favorite place to take the family in the PNW?

B&G: Had to think about that, there are so many wonderful places in the PNW! Our go to though was always Point Defiance in Tacoma.

What is something anyone visiting the PNW with kids should do?

B&G: Start the morning playing in the snow on the mountain. End the day flying a kite on the ocean shore, and stop at a local spot for a meal along the way. It’s a long day, but worth it!

What was the biggest hurdle opening a business during the pandemic?

B&G: Getting in front of our target audience and earning their trust. At the beginning of the pandemic social media was the only pipeline to get our name out there and it was flooded with every business trying to stay alive. That coupled with not being skilled at social media made it the challengeyist of challenges

Why do kids consignment (over adult or general)?

B&G: We both had new little ones in our lives and were always on the hunt for the best deals. In February of 2020 Nancy learned of a sleepy children's resale shop available for sale. We both value thrifting as a way to save money and be sustainable, love being a part of the community, and with several years of retail experience between us, this opportunity seemed like a natural fit.

Favorite local product?

B&G: Oh my so many, we hate to leave any one out. Off the top of the head, anything from Pine & Sprout, any local plant store, and McCoy Kids.
