MADELYN PURSELL

For the 110th week of "7 QUESTION SUNDAY" we shine the spotlight on another influential individual from the PNW. Madelyn Pursell is a rising star on the PNW youth Jiu-Jitsu shattering glass ceilings and learning life lessons along the way (while wracking up some nice hardware)!

4EVRGRN: Hey, MP! Tell us a little about yourself.

MP: My name is Madelyn Pursell, I have been doing Jiu-Jitsu for 4 years under Professor Arthur Ruff for Ruffhouse Jiu-Jitsu. I love competing and hope in the future to be able to travel around the USA representing the PNW in Jiu-jitsu.

What made you want to try BJJ?

MP: I was wanting to try martial arts, one of my good friends took me to class with her to try it out. I instantly fell in LOVE!

What was the hardest move to master?

MP: The hardest move to master would be bow and arrow, which is a choke from back. I feel like it is the hardest move to master since there are so many moves leading up to it.

How does BJJ help you in your daily life?

MP: BJJ helps get rid of any stress, helps me relax because you roll with the flow. I recommend trying Jiu-jitsu if you are looking to try a new hobby

What are your goals for BJJ?

MP: Long term to become a black belt! Short term goal is to get a super fight (superfight when you challenge a specific competitor to a single match).

What are you most proud of so far that you’ve accomplished?

MP: My most proud moment/ accomplishment was when I won double gold for the first time, I was not feeling 100% myself that day. Half way through my day I took a nap. It did not make me feel any better but I pushed myself and won all 6 matches!

What’s your favorite thing to do when you aren’t doing BJJ?

MP: I love to read sci-fi or fantasy books. I'm big into exploring new places, I spend a lot of my off time hiking the PNW.

What advice would you give to another girl wanting to start BJJ?

MP: Never think that just because you are a girl you aren't as fast or as strong as a boy. Never give up even when it's hard, you can achieve anything if you put all of your heart, and hard work into it.
