Week 167 - Brain Renewal Center

For the 167th week of "7 QUESTION SUNDAY" we shine the spotlight on another influential individual from the PNW. The Brain Renewal Center is treating numerous brain conditions with IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback.

4EVRGRN: Hey, RC! Tell us a little about yourselves.

RC: My name is Rebecca Church, PA-C, RN, ICP. I have over 16 years of experience as a Physician Assistant and Registered Nurse in Emergency/Trauma Medicine, Urgent Care, Trauma/ Surgical Nurse, Flight Nurse, and an USAF Veteran.  With my personal and professional experiences with PTSD, trauma, and trauma fatigue, and with my extensive history working in trauma witnessing the effects on thousands of people’s mental health and overall wellbeing, I have decided to shift my focus of caring from traditional medicine approach of medications to a more holistic and alternative route using IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback therapy.

  1. What is IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback?

RC: When we suffer emotional or physical traumas, the brain “freezes” in dysfunctional patterns that lead to dysregulation of the brain and the body.  IASIS MCN causes brief micro-stimulation (3 picowatts) to the brain resulting in temporary fluctuations in brainwaves, allowing the brain to reorganize and heal itself.  IASIS MCN does not train the brain like traditional neurofeedback, but instead “disentrains” or re-boots the brain from “frozen or stuck” patterns.

IASIS MCN brings balance to the central nervous system by calming the sympathetic system, which allows the parasympathetic system to rise for the brain and body to rest, digest, auto neuro-regulate, and process at an optimal level.

Many psychological and physical conditions can be helped with this innovative therapy.

  1. What can new patients expect when visiting your center for the first time?

RC: During the first session, an initial intake assessment will be done to go over client's medical history/ diagnoses, current medications, and what are their most prominent symptoms. This can take a little over an hour.

They will sit comfortably in a chair while the certified provider cleans and preps areas on the scalp for the conductive paste needed to attach 5 lightweight electrodes. These electrodes are placed behind or in front of each ear, one on the neck and the remaining two electrodes are moved to various sites throughout the session and change in subsequent sessions. The stimulation is not perceived by the client.  It is best if you sit and relax quietly during the session, trying not to think of any imagery or constructive thoughts.  After the session, the paste will be removed with cotton and witch hazel.

Please bring a ponytail for long hair, avoid makeup to forehead, and please try to avoid hair products the day of your appointment.

Ensure you drink plenty of water and eat something small within a couple hours before your appointment.

  1. Is there something everyone can do to improve their brain health?

RC: Yes. Along with IASIS Microcurrent Neurofeedback therapy, there are many complementary modalities to help improve brain health. These include: exercising regularly, eating nutritious foods, eating enough protein for body weight, decrease intake of processed foods, decreasing controllable stress, having good social support/ relationships, and having a great therapist to talk with and process emotional and physical stressors.

  1. What makes your clinic unique from other health service clinics?

RC: IASIS microcurrent neurofeedback therapy offers support for the physiological or physical aspects of mental health without medications or their side effects.  By safely and effectively re-booting the abnormal patterns of dysfunction in the brain, the brain heals itself from chronic stress, emotional, or physical trauma, which leads to better autoregulation and optimal functioning of the brain with enduring and sustainable results in 10-20 sessions. Of course, the number of sessions can vary based on each individual person and their brain.

  1. What feedback do you get from patients?

RC: Our experience shows that more than 85% of our clients observe a noticeable positive response in one to three sessions.  In clinical settings, MCN has repeatedly helped with clarity, energy during the day, sleeping at night, sense of humor, motivation to get things done, ease of getting things done, improved memory, ability to read and listen with little or no distraction. IASIS MCN has been shown clinically to bring about significant improvements of problems faced after a head injury, or psychological trauma, or problems that interfere with everyday functions, such as depression, irritability, impatience, and explosiveness. Many clients have seen a significant improvement in their chronic fatigue and chronic pain. We have also seen improvement in athletic and academic performance.  Anyone can benefit from IASIS MCN.

  1. Can this treatment help children?

RC: Yes. IASIS MCN has been used in children of all ages. We have seen significant benefit in many conditions, such as: ADHD/ ADD, learning disorders, sleeping issues, academic improvement, anxiety, depression, autism, sensory integration. Helps improve focus, clarity, motivation, sleep.

  1. Best way to unwind and relax in the PNW?

RC: Going to the mountains and hiking one of the amazing trails. Going to the Puget Sound or coast to watch    the sunsets. Running at Point Defiance. Checking out a local event with live music, good food, and brews.  Enjoying the two weeks of sun and warmth during the summer.
