tolu
For the 98th week of "7 QUESTION SUNDAY" we shine the spotlight on another influential individual from the PNW. Tolu is a rising star in the Western Washington food scene bringing Fijian food to the pacific northwest.
4EVRGRN: Hey, Tolu! Tell us a little about yourselves.
Tolu: Tolu means the number ‘three’ in the Fijian language, 3 brothers ( Anand, Krishan, and Raajan) make up the ownership of Tolu. There are three influences in the food that we serve: Indo-Fijian, Native Fijian, with a touch of the Pacific Northwest. We decided to start Tolu because we wanted to share our culture with Seattle. We believe the best way to share our culture is through food.
You can find us at Point Ruston Farmers Market. Currently we only operate on weekends but the best way to keep an eye on our schedule is to follow us on Social media.
What is the first thing a new customer should try from your menu?
Tolu: Chicken Tolu Tacos, it's our most popular and best seller.
What is the most popular item on your menu?
Tolu: Same answer, that’s why we chose it. Everyone loves it.
How has Washington embraced Fijian food?
Tolu: Washingtonians are willing to try our food, a lot of times it starts with a conversation about Fiji or the rich smells from our curries and spices. We have found that people appreciate our story and our food
When you’re ready for some time off, where is your favorite place to escape in the PNW?
Tolu: For us, being close to the water is usually our go-to, anywhere from the San Juan Islands to the Oregon coast. Sometimes a place with a good spa, room service, and a good restaurant is acceptable.
What is a unique trait of PNW foodies?
Tolu: So far, we have found PNW foodies and influencers to be encouraging, supportive, and very genuine. (Shout out to @teena_thach and Ken @feedthepudge)
What sets Fijian food apart from other types of cuisine?
Tolu: The 3 main cultural influences in Fijian cuisine: Melanesian/Polynesian, East Indian, and Chinese. Each culture brings a unique flavor profile to our dishes. Our Masala blend alone (lovingly called Mom's Masala) has been passed down from generations and is made inhouse. This unique blend along with generational cooking methods is what sets us apart.
Favorite local product?
Tolu: Fresh Seafood! Everything from Clams and Oysters to King Crabs.
You’re going to want to try Tolu for yourself! You can find them on Facebook and Instagram @toluseattle to find a location near you.
