Tom Habelt

For the 88TH week of "7 QUESTION SUNDAY" we shine the spotlight on another influential individual from the PNW. Tom Habelt is the champion off single dad winning with is live cooking experiences with his kids and owner of Habelt Custom Tile.

4EVRGRN: Hey, TH! Tell us a little about yourself.
TH: Hi my name is Tom Habelt. I live in Albany Oregon. I am a tile contractor by day and own Habelt Custom Tile. You can find it on Facebook at www.facebook/habeltcustomtile. I also have a cooking group called Dads dinners and cook with my kids every night. We live to cook live in my group.

1.You’ve become one of the most beloved members of the GrubNChill group, what inspired you to get your kids involved with cooking?

TH: Well 3 years ago I became a single dad. I really did not know how to cook. We ate out every day. Then something clicked one day in the restaurant and we decided we needed a change. We started to cook at home. Eventually we got good at it. I got the kids involved because it was a special bonding experience that we never experienced before!! Its been so rewarding sitting down together every night.

2.When you want the night off from cooking, what’s the best meal in PNW?

TH: Well it is a rarity that we take a night off but if we go out I love to go to great local restaurants. We have a good Mexican place here in Albany called El Presidente. I love tacos!.

3. Favorite part of owning a construction business in the PNW?

TH: My favorite part about owning my tile company is being able to put smiles on people’s faces when I get done with their projects. Also, the freedom I have with my schedule. Being a single dad with 4 kids is a challenge but I get to have unlimited flexibility with my schedule so it makes it easier.

4.Favorite local product?

TH: It’s hard to choose just 1. But I have a sweet tooth and I love Maui Melts. The company is like 20 minutes from me and they make the best caramels.

5. Best place to escape in the PNW?

TH: I love the coast. My favorite beach town is Seaside. Love the shops and atmosphere.

6. Wildest PNW experience?

TH: Last year I was driving through downtown Portland and I made a wrong turn and was stuck in the middle of a riot! It was pretty wild. I made it out safe.

7. Favorite family friendly PNW activity?

TH: This is another hard one to chose from. We do so much as a family. Zoo, aquarium, arcade's. But what we love to do most as a family is simple and free. We love to take hikes. One of my favorite places to take the kids is drift creek falls. It has a suspension bridge and a beautiful waterfall.
